About Americas Society Americas Society is the premier organization dedicated to education, debate and dialogue in the Americas. Established by David Rockefeller in 1965, our mission is to foster an understanding of the contemporary political, social and economic issues confronting Latin America, the Caribbean, and Canada, and to increase public awareness and appreciation of the diverse cultural heritage of the Americas and the importance of the inter-American relationship.
Culture
Americas Society’s Literature, Music and Visual Arts programs aim to create a space for interaction and enhanced appreciation for emerging and established cultural figures from across the hemisphere by presenting writers, musicians, artists, and scholars from Latin America, the Caribbean, and Canada to U.S. audiences.
Literature
Since 1968, the Literature program has published our renowned semi-annual literary magazine, Review: Literature and Arts of the Americas, the leading English language forum for literature from Latin America, the Caribbean, and Canada. We supported the first English translation of One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, opening a path for critically acclaimed writers from Latin America, such as Manuel Puig, Guillermo Cabrera Infante, and Mario Vargas Llosa, to reach U.S. audiences with their groundbreaking work. Each season, the Literature program also organizes a series of public programs highlighting writers and literature from the hemisphere.
Music
The Music Program presents the annual Music of the Americas concert series to showcase the diversity of styles and genres of classical, modern, and traditional music being produced in the Americas. Our Music Education Program brings music instruction and interactive performances with musicians from throughout the Americas to more than 5,000 New York City public school children.
Visual Arts
The Visual Arts program boasts the longest-standing private space in the U.S. dedicated to exhibiting and promoting art from Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada; it has achieved a unique and renowned leadership position in the field, producing both historical and contemporary exhibitions. The Visual Arts program present three exhibitions annually, each accompanied by a series of public and educational programs featuring outstanding artists, curators, critics and scholars. The Visual Arts program produces exhibition catalogues as well as scholarly publications, including the seminal work, A Principality of Its Own: 40 Years of Visual Arts at the Americas Society.
Public Policy
As the leading forum for hemisphere-wide debate, our public policy programs engage opinion leaders from the public and private sectors in positive dialogue at our fora in New York, Washington DC, and Miami, and in Canada and throughout Latin America, to exchange ideas and formulate solutions to the challenges facing the Americas today. Our signature programs – including the Latin American Cities and the Presidents of the Americas series – promote economic and social development, the rule of law, democracy, and free trade throughout the Americas. Our working groups comprise experts and leading private-sector representatives and address issues such as the Rule of Law, Energy, and Hispanic Integration, and focus on specific countries, such as Brazil. Working group findings are published for the benefit of all in the Americas – most recently, U.S. and Hispanic Business Integration: Expanding the Economic Contributions of Immigrants.
Americas Society’s keystone policy publication, Americas Quarterly: The Policy Journal for Our Hemisphere (AQ), is the only journal dedicated exclusively to policy issues of the Western Hemisphere. AQ promotes deeper policy analysis and debate on economics, finance, and politics in the Western Hemisphere and engages the new generation of leaders across the hemisphere.
