Goethe-Institutes is the cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with a global reach.
We promote knowledge of the German language abroad and foster international cultural cooperation. We convey a comprehensive picture of Germany by providing information on Germany's cultural, social and political life.
Through our network of Goethe-Institutes, Goethe Centres, cultural societies and reading rooms, alongside our examination and language learning centres, we perform the principal tasks of cultural and educational policy abroad. We work in partnership with public and private cultural bodies, the German federal states and municipalities, and the corporate sector.
We draw on the rich variety of our many-faceted open society and Germany's lively culture. We combine the experiences and conceptions of our partners in Germany and abroad with our professional skills and engage in a dialogue rooted in partnership. In doing so, we function as service providers and partners for everyone taking an active interest in Germany and the German language and culture, and act independently with no political affiliations.
We face the cultural policy challenges of globalisation and develop innovative concepts for a world made more human through mutual understanding, where cultural diversity is seen as an asset.
The Goethe-Institut New York organizes and supports a broad spectrum of cultural events that present German culture and promote international cultural exchange. The work of our language department concentrates on training workshops and seminars for teachers of German and close collaboration with the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG). We offer a wide range of marketing and teaching materials tailored towards American initiatives supporting German as a foreign language. Language courses are offered in cooperation with our partners at the Deutsches Haus of New York University. The library and information service of the Goethe-Institut in the US is centralized at the Goethe-Institut New York. The Library aims to provide an accurate, pluralistic view of German culture, politics and society. Moreover, we offer the public a multifaceted collection of books, audio-visual materials, newspapers and journals as well as access to databases and an ongoing exhibition of new German literature. North American Region The Goethe-Institut New York is the regional coordinator of the 11 institutes in the North American region. In the United States: Boston, New York, Washington, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles. In Canada: Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto. In Mexico: Mexico City and Guadalajara. Cuba also belongs to the North American region and work leading to the establishment of a Goethe-Institut in Havana is underway.
The network of six institutes in the United States are committed to the same set of goals and objectives.
