Bamiyan is named after a part of central Afghanistan where two tall standing Buddhas were carved into limestone cliffs. Read about the landmark Bamiyan's history here. Some wonderful photos of Bamiyan and Afghanistan can be viewed at photographer Luke Powell's website, and also at Dr. Volker Thewalt's website. Find out more about Afghanistan at The Asia Society and at Afghanistan Online.

Established in 1993 by New York's original afghan restauranteur, Bamiyan is run by former Afghan supreme court judge Sayed Ahmad Shah and his brother Sayed Nader Shah.

Afghan food is known for basmati rice dishes, lamb and chicken kabobs, mild curries, and a variety of dumplings and pasta dishes. We welcome you to taste, experience, and enjoy the traditional food and hospitality at Bamiyan.
